Swashbuckling, sword fighting, dueling - whatever you want to call it, fencing is all the rage amongst the coolest of people... Peter Pan, Robin Hood, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Pierce Brosnan, and even Madonna. The sport has its roots in 17th century sword fighting and is one of only four sports featured at every Olympic Games in the modern era. But, it is as much a sport of leisure as it is a competitive goal for participants.

Whether you just want to try something new, get/stay in shape, or pursue an Olympic medal, we have programs for all skill levels, in sabre, foil, and epee. All equipment is provided. It's a safe, exciting, and unique experience. We are proudly the longest running fencing club in Atlantic Canada and hold the 2009 Atlantic University Fencing Champions title. ROCK & ICE CLIMBING

In February 1996, a squash court in the Lady Beaverbrook Gymnasium was converted into a climbing wall. It is one of the most popular areas in the L.B. Gymnasium, with 150-200 annual members comprised of UNB students, community members, and youth. With its growing popularity, the facility was expanded in 2001, doubling its size. Activities at the Wall are supervised by the UNB Rock and Ice Climbing Club throughout the year.

The Climbing Club is run by five elected executive members and 20-30 devoted volunteer members, who together, organize and operate all club activities including: regular hours, the Banff Mountain Film Festival, private bookings, indoor and outdoor climbing instruction, local and regional competitions, etc. Due to the club’s strong volunteer base, it is able to provide extremely low prices on all services.

Visit the club’s official website for available times to climb or to learn more about the club and climbing lessons offered.

SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

The UNB Synchronized skating team is a club that is mainly student run, which provides a unique atmosphere. The team as a whole provides input and suggestions that help shape not only the program, but also the overall direction of the team.

All four class years and all skating test levels (never-evers to Seniors) are represented. The time commitment for synchro is 4 to 5 hours a week, but the bonding and teamwork are exceptional.

The UNB synchro team can give you back incredible friendships, quality skating and the potential to shape an up-and-coming program.

Synchronized skating is a specialized branch of skating distinct from figures, free skating, ice dancing and pair skating. It involves teams of skaters (from twelve to twenty-four) performing a variety of types of footwork, group formations and skating maneuvers. Heads, legs, arms and bodies must be synchronized and in unison. Formations must be accurate; lines must be straight. Programs are judged for technical difficulty and presentation (artistic impression).

If you'd like to learn more or have any questions, please contact the club at icecats@unb.ca .
